Your machine is part of the experience.

Jotunheim Press software runs locally on your own computer. A dedicated GPU with sufficient VRAM is required — integrated graphics will not work. These requirements cover the Narrative Engine, World Builder, and The Spire in VR.

Why these requirements exist

The Narrative Engine and World Builder tools run local language models through KoboldCPP. The reference model we are developing against, Qwen2.5-coder-7B-Instruct-Q4_K_M, consumes roughly 5–7GB of VRAM on its own. A 12GB GPU is the practical minimum to leave headroom for the model, the Godot engine, the operating system, and any larger models you may want to experiment with later.

Integrated graphics are not enough

You need a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics card. Local AI inference and VR rendering both rely on GPU compute, and integrated graphics chips do not have the VRAM or throughput required.

Hardware requirements

Minimum

  • GPU: NVIDIA or AMD with 12GB VRAM
  • CPU: 4+ cores
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: SSD recommended; HDD not advised
  • OS: Linux, Windows, or macOS
  • VR headset: Meta Quest 3 via wired Link or wireless Air Link
  • VR runtime: OpenXR with SteamVR or Meta Quest Link

Recommended

  • GPU: NVIDIA or AMD with 12GB+ VRAM
  • CPU: 6+ cores
  • RAM: 32GB
  • Storage: SSD
  • OS: Linux, Windows, or macOS
  • VR headset: Meta Quest 3 via wired Link or wireless Air Link
  • VR runtime: OpenXR with SteamVR or Meta Quest Link

Optimum

  • GPU: NVIDIA or AMD with 16GB+ VRAM
  • CPU: 8+ cores
  • RAM: 64GB
  • Storage: SSD
  • OS: Linux, Windows, or macOS
  • VR headset: Meta Quest 3 via wired Link or wireless Air Link
  • VR runtime: OpenXR with SteamVR or Meta Quest Link

Reference language model

Our current target model is Qwen2.5-coder-7B-Instruct-Q4_K_M. It is a quantized GGUF model loaded through KoboldCPP and was chosen for strong JSON adherence and code-tuning. It requires approximately 5–7GB of VRAM.

Larger models will require more VRAM. If you want to experiment beyond the reference model, plan for the optimum tier.

VR notes

The Spire is being developed and tested with the Meta Quest 3 connected to a PC through wired Link or wireless Air Link. The game runs alongside the Narrative Engine and World Builder on the desktop, not as a standalone headset app.

OpenXR is the supported VR runtime. You will also need SteamVR or the Meta Quest Link software running on your PC.

Steam Frame support will be available in the future.

Required software versions

  • KoboldCPP: v1.5+ with GGUF loader and flash attention enabled
  • Godot: 4.2+ (GDScript 2.0)
  • Python: 3.10+ (for batch testing scripts and general processing)
