Every saga deserves a skald who remembers.

In The Spire, the world does not reset when you close the client. The people you help, betray, or forget remember you. The oaths you swear echo. The grudges you earn wait. This is the Narrative Engine: an AI story engine that listens, remembers, and weaves a campaign that belongs to you alone.

Powered by our self-hosted AI stack — Orpheus, Rhapsode, Pantheon, KoboldCPP, and ComfyUI — The Spire is being built so that your story is not written by a committee of quest designers. It is shaped by what you do.

The problem with "story" in games

Most RPGs remember you through checkboxes.

Did you spare the jarl? +1 reputation. Did you burn the village? The ending slide changes. But the merchant whose son you saved does not bring it up three sessions later. The rival you humiliated does not scheme against you in the dark. The world feels alive for a moment, then it forgets.

That forgetting is what the Narrative Engine is built to solve.

What "living NPCs" actually means

In The Spire, characters are more than quest givers with voice lines.

They carry memory of what has happened between you. They hold relationships shaped by trust, fear, loyalty, and debt. Their moods shift. Their faces change with circumstance. Cross one too often and she may refuse your council entirely. Earn another's faith and he may follow you into the frostlands without question.

This is not scripted branching. It is emergent behavior made possible by a memory model, a relationship system, and a reasoning language model working together — all running locally through the Narrative Engine.

A Game Master that never forgets the campaign

For decades, RPG players have asked the same question: can a computer ever feel like a live tabletop session?

We are building The Spire to answer yes.

  • Solo players can finally run a real campaign on their own time, with a world that responds to improvisation, not just pre-written dialogue.
  • Online groups can use the engine as a co-GM: generating descriptions, tracking NPC agendas, and remembering details that even the best human GM might lose across a months-long campaign.

The dream of the solo Dungeons & Dragons experience — and the assisted D&D experience — is the same dream that drives us.

Built for a real game, not a chat toy

There is no shortage of AI chatbots that will roleplay with you. That is not what we are making.

The Narrative Engine is the backend of a real, playable world. It is tied to The Spire's lore, its factions, its geography, and its consequences. The stories it generates are not disconnected vignettes. They are chapters in the same saga, shaped by the history you build every time you play.

Yours, not rented

Here is what makes the Narrative Engine different: it runs on your machine.

No cloud. No subscription. No one else's terms of service deciding what stories you are allowed to tell. Your saves, your characters, your campaign memory — they live on your own hardware, privately.

That is not just a privacy stance. It is a creative stance. Your saga belongs to you.

Where this leads

The Spire is the first expression of the Narrative Engine, but the engine itself has broader ambitions. We are building tools that could one day power:

  • Assisted tabletop campaigns run by a human GM with an AI second.
  • Solo narrative campaigns that feel as reactive as a live session.
  • Persistent online worlds where every player leaves a mark that others can find.

The frost giants do not forget. Neither will your world.
